This market was the second farmers market established in San Francisco, opening in 1981 to serve the Tenderloin and South of Market districts with a good source of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other needs. Both areas had many low income people, including Filipino Americans and a growing number of SE Asian refugees from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as Chinese Americans.
